Abu Rugs Sets up at High Point

After dedicating 21 years solely to interior designers and architects, high-end area rug manufacturer Abu Rugs and Home is branching out to include retailers among its clientele.

Company owner and founder Abu-Bakr Khan told HTT that he recently created a new division, Abu Handcrafted Rugs, to appeal to more mainstream shoppers and retailers with not only very upscale handcrafted soft floor coverings but also some special assortments that can retail at a more middle-bracket price level.

"I've always sourced all of my rugs from overseas and sold them directly to architects and designers," he said. "But now I've taken our top-notch pieces that have traditionally been our most popular sellers and started opening them up to the trade and expand their reach into retail stores and larger design houses nationally."

While Abu Rugs and Home typically shows its wares to customers from its headquarters in Jamestown just outside High Point, now the company has leased two temporary showrooms — space G-1332 in Market Square and space 1300 at Showplace on the park — to introduce this new business segment this week during the High Point Market.

The reason for two showrooms is to display and present the line by category and price, Khan explained, designating the more high-end and high-priced pieces to the Market Square location and the middle-price bracket items to the Showplace site.

Abu Handcrafted Rugs' highest end products comprise two new collections. European Passages is an all-wool grouping of handcrafted and hand-carved pieces featuring designs inspired by European architecture. The rugs are designed and manufactured by the company at its India facility and are set to retail rom $2,200 to $2,400 for an 8-by-10. Persian Empire Passages is the second collection and consists of rugs made in high knot-per-square-inch constructions and traditional patterns but in updated palettes. These rugs run at higher retail price levels, ranging from $4,000 to $4,900 for an 8-by-10.

The showroom at Showplace will carry the more attainable rugs, priced to retail for $800 to $3,000. These include 16- to 300-knots-per-square-inch varieties from India, Pakistan and Nepal.

In other news, the company in late March opened a second Abu Rugs and Home retail unit, this one in Tyson Corner in McLean, Va. The company's original store is at its headquarters.
