Surtex announces designext student competition winners.

White Plains, N.Y. - Four surface design students have been named winners of the designext international student competition organized by Surtex, the trade show for the art and design market. The grand prize winner will be announced during the show at the Javits Center in New York, which takes place May 19-21.
"Some 75 students from 15 international design schools participated in the designext challenge to create a collection of six original surface designs to be used in a wellness/healthcare setting," said Penny Sikalis, vp of show organizer GLM and manager of the Surtex. "Their submissions of highly creative work impressed the judges with their imagination and commercial viability. We are proud to nurture talented young professionals as they embark on their design careers."
The four winners are:
- Hye Jung In of Seoul, Korea, a graduate in Textile Design at the Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA);
- Hannah Rampley of Blackpool, a third year student in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds College of Art (Leeds, West Yorkshire);
- Alicia Teixeira of San Francisco, a senior in Textile Design at the Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA);
- Jessica Katie Walsh of Canterbury, Kent, a third year student in Printed Textile Design at University of Southampton, Winchester School of Art (Winchester, Kent).
Each will be flown to New York City to participate in Surtex. Their winning entries will be displayed in a booth presentation. In addition, they will receive in-depth critiques of their portfolios by the judges,and exposure to the industry through networking activities. The grand prize winner, who will announced on May 20, will be awarded $1000 in cash.
This year's five judges included: Ronnie Gold, vp, Design Home and Accent Fabrics; Bryan Parker, vp of design, CHF Industries; Jason Pollen, president emeritus, Surface Design Association; Lauren Sizeland, director of business development and licensing, Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Cynthia White, founder and creative director, Cynthia White New York.
