Lily Pulitzer, 81
Retail Editor 5 -- Home Textiles Today, April 8, 2013
Palm Beach, Fla. - Design doyenne Lily Pulitzer passed away here yesterday surrounded by family. She was 81.
"Lilly was a true original who has brought together generations through her bright and happy mark on the world," the company said in announcing her death on its Facebook page.
After moving to Palm Beach with husband Peter Pulitzer, who owned citrus groves, she set up a juice stand for diversion. The business "soon gave her a closet full of juice-stained clothes," the company's web site noted. She devised the brightly colored, highly patterned shift dress that would become her signature to hide the stains.
"Soon she was selling more dresses than juice," according to the company.
In the soft home space, Dan River was Lily Pulitzer's major licensee for several years. Today Lily Pulitzer bed and bath is sold as a Garnet Hill exclusive.
