Walmart queues up new centers for online fulfillment

San Bruno, Calif. - Walmart touted two additions to what it calls its "next-generation" fulfillment network, including its largest online fulfillment center to date under construction in Pennsylvania.
The Bethlehem, Pa., center scheduled to open during the first quarter of 2014 occupies more than one million square feet. The 800,000-sq.-ft. new center based in Fort Worth, Texas, began shipping orders last week.
Walmart now operates more than 130 distribution centers. The new additions aim at creating a seamless shopping experience across online, mobile and in-store retailing.
"With our dedicated online facilities and 4,100 stores within five miles of two-thirds of the U.S. population, we gain a significant advantage by being positioned in the most important location - close to our customers," said Joel Anderson, president and ceo of Walmart.com. "This unique combination allows us to get more products to our customers faster and at a lower cost."
Walmart.com will offer more than five million products online this holiday season - over twice as last year. That includes its own merchandise as well as items offered through marketplace sellers on the site.
