Dear ol' Dad keeps comps up in June's week 2

New York - Aided by the Father's Day holiday, comps were up 2.9% in the second week of June following a 2.8% gain the prior week, according to The Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.

Month-to-date, June was up 2.9% compared to June of last year, relative to a target of 3.3% gain. Month-over-month showed a 0.4% drop, compared to a flat target.

June is a five-week month on the retail calendar ending on July 6.

"Father's Day promotions were a factor in bringing people into stores, producing positive spill over business into other product areas," noted Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.

Also helping business were improved temperatures, which Levis said have finally warmed up to seasonal levels in most regions. As a result, sales of hot-weather merchandise, such as summer apparel, fans and air conditioners, were active.

"Business is expected to be steady to slightly better as we begin to approach the Independence Day holiday," Levis added. "Retailers will face easy comparisons against last year's Independence Day sales as the holiday falls six days earlier than last year on the retail calendar."
