Comps rose with summer temps last week

New York - The summer season heated up comps by 2.8% in the third week of June, following a 2.9% gain the prior week, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
Month-to-date, June was up 2.8% compared to June of last year, relative to a target of a 3.3% gain. Month-over-month showed a 0.5% drop, compared to a flat target.
For the retail week ended June 22, same-store sales were up 3.2% in the discount channel and 2.0% in the department store sement.
Warm weather drove customer traffic increased for seasonal categories. These included air conditioners, fans, pool and beach equipment, and swimwear and other hot-weather apparel, "as most customers are buying according to immediate needs," explained Redbook analyst Catlin Levis.
In addition, food and household basics generally performed well.
