Comps a mixed bag for retailers last week

New York - Comps were up 2.7% in the third week of May following a 2.4% gain the prior week, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.

For the week ended May 25, same-store sales rose 3.4% in the discount channel and were up 1.5% in the department store segment.

Sales for the week were mixed, observed Redbook analyst Catlin Levis.

"Some retailers said the pace of sales was uneven, slowing down in the middle of the week, but improved as we approached Memorial Day weekend," she continued. "Seasonal merchandise was reported to be selling well where temperatures have been warm. Promotional and competitive pricing also helped sales."
