May's week 2 falls short as Mother's Day shopping ends
Retail Editor 4 -- Home Textiles Today, May 21, 2013
New York - With Mother's Day shopping over, comps were up just 2.4% in the second week of May compared to a 2.8% gain the prior week, according to The Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
For the week ended May 18, comps in the discount channel rose 2.9% while comps in the department store segment were up 1.4%.
"Coming off the Mother's Day last minute shopping on Sunday [May 12], sales and traffic slowed across the board during the week," explained Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst. "The sales performance also reflected difficult comparisons with last year's pre-Mother's Day sales, which fell a week sooner this year. Retailers are hopeful that sales will strengthen over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend."
