Post Easter, April kicks off with comp slump

New York - Comps were up 2.0% in the first week of April, falling below plan, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.

Month-to-date, April was up 2.0% compared to April of last year, relative to a revised target of a 2.6% gain. Month-over-month showed a 2.7% drop, relative to a target of a 2.1% drop.

Comps rose 2.7% in the discount store channel and 0.7% in the department store s segment for the week ended April 13.

"Most retailers suffered from comparisons with last year's Easter-boosted week," noted Redbook analyst Catlin Levis. "Areas with warmer weather generated sales within target ranges for many retailers in seasonal categories."
