Cohen is chairman, ceo at Sears Canada

Former soft line president and cmo succeeds Walters
TORONTO — Sears Canada, based here, has appointed Mark Cohen chairman and ceo, succeeding Paul Walters, who has left to pursue other interests.

Cohen has most recently served as president of soft lines and chief marketing officer for Sears, Roebuck and Co. since September 1999. He previously served as chairman and ceo of Bradlees from 1994 to 1997. From 1987 to 1994, he was with Federated Department Stores, where he was president of Goldsmith's and chairman and ceo of Lazarus.

His background also includes positions at Dayton Hudson Corp., now called Target Corp., Abraham & Strauss, Lord & Taylor and The Gap.

"I am pleased that in Mark Cohen we have an experienced retail executive who shares the company's commitment to the continued growth of Sears Canada," said Alan Lacy, chairman and ceo of Sears, Roebuck and Co.

"Mark is both a strong retail executive and a superb merchant. His skills are well suited to the challenges of growing our Sears and Eatons franchises," Lacy added.

Regarding the outgoing Walters, Lacy said, "I would like to thank Paul for his outstanding contribution to Sears Canada, including the successful relaunch of Eatons. Through his leadership, Sears Canada has achieved tremendous growth and success during the four years he led the company."

A successor to fill Cohen's previous position at Sears, Roebuck and Co. had not been named as of presstime.
