New York - Comps were up 3.3% in the second week of July following a 3.0% gain in the prior week, according to the the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
For the retail week ended July 20, same-store sales in the discount channel increased 3.8%, while comps in the department store segment rose 2.3%.
Month-to-date, July was up 3.1% compared to July of last year, in-line with the target. Month-over-month showed a 0.9% gain, also in-line with the target.
For most retailers, July is a season for clearance of summer merchandise ahead of the transition into fall and Back-to-School, noted Redbook analyst Catlin Levis.
"As a heat wave hits most parts of the country, air conditioned malls drew in more than the usual number of customers trying to escape the heat," she explained. "Seasonal themes continued to drive sales according to retailers, with consumers maintaining demand for hard-line items, such as: air conditioners, fans and outdoor furniture."
Most stores told Redbook their clearance sales were running on plan, she added.
