New York - Business held steady at retail last week, according to the Johnson Redbook.

Comps rose 2.7% for the week ended July 24, keeping pace with the prior week. The discount channel logged a 3.4% same-store sales increase, with department store comps rising 1.1%.

"Hot temperatures brought customers into the stores," said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst. "Others reported sluggish business and unmotivated consumers, suggesting little more than the usual mid-July doldrums."

With the back-to-school season underway, children's apparel is leading the way for some retailers, she said. However, demand for the category "is not expected to replace summer seasonal business until August."
