Decosit adds intensity

Last month's Decosit highlighted several trends, including intense colors, larger than life scale for patterns and silk as the new favorite fabric.

As has been the case at most of the home furnishings and apparel shows this year, the energy level was subdued, a typical scenario when the economy — specific or global — sours.

The color story was the most interesting as the European suppliers toned down the bold citrus flavors of their color palettes from a year or two ago to more moderate but still energetic shades. Purple is still the color of the season, ranging from pale tones to deep aubergine with black or brown tendencies.

A new sense of blue was evident with mid to pale tones used as main color statements or important accents.

There were developments in technique, especially in creating sheen via finishing processes, innovations in velvets that create unique effects, embroideries in contemporary and classic versions, as well as lots of luxury in fabrics that ranged from silk taffetas and satins to chenilles with nuances involving other yarns and a surprising renaissance of flamestitch motifs in prints and wovens.

A clear new favorite was the entire stripe category with bold, crisp versions — almost espadrille in design — and definitely not mirror interpretations of the prevailing fashion statement for the category.

And for a show that labels itself as upholstery fabric focused, many exhibitors at Decosit made major presentations of sheers, mid-weights, and multi-purpose fabrics in collections of coordinates that were subtle in coordination and flexible in fabric.

And not just as an exciting statement, exhibitors were featuring designs in larger-than-life dimensions, with tree of life and Jacobean motifs the favored designs. A wide range from contemporary to toiles also were important in this genre.
