The Colors of Maison & Objet
September 13, 2004-- Home Textiles Today,
Paris – It was a lively, colorful Maison & Objet here last week with virtually all colors of the rainbow in evidence.
And color was the dominant story, overshadowing pattern design, new techniques, fabrications and even the fabrics themselves. A host of shades in the purple family were fashion favorites in all home furnishings segments.
Bold orange — from citrus shades to pumpkins — which has been the dominant European fashion color for a couple of years now, has been expanded into more subtle tones including peach, apricot, and sherbert as well as metallic effects in copper and bronze.
Even more significant is the emergence of purples, reds, greens and some blues to work with and soften the impact of the orange statement. Deep rich berry colors like blueberry and blackberry were used to offset orange, as well as hot pinks and reds in more intense combinations.
Within the purple family, the fashion news extended from soft mauves to rich dark aubergines. The gamut of purples often was mixed with a mélange of hot pinks to reds.
And the color story had a major impact on the overall look of the home textiles world — lively, bold dramatic uses of patterns on beds and on decorative pillows, bath products and window coverings. Blankets and throws were special beneficiaries of the color explosion with new fabrications ranging from novelty weaves and luxurious tweeds to dramatic plaids and stripes.
Yellow, a former fashion favorite, was definitely in the background.
At the couture level, understatement and neutral colors were the prevalent directions. But the upper end also reflected the luxe appeal from apparel — elaborate embroideries, appliqués and metallic treatments like gaufrage produced unusual decorative effects.
Once again, rugs were a standout at this Maison & Objet, with contemporary designs in the spotlight. Luxury constructions, especially silk, were favorites.
