Newport/Layton champions quilts

At the New York Market – Top of bed, decorative pillow and bath coordinate supplier Newport/Layton Home is getting cozier in bed, now that it has added quilts to its product line for the first time.
Al Whiten, a 28-year veteran of the home textiles industry, joined Newport six months ago to help the company foray into this category.
Whiten spent all of his career at Fashion Industries/American Mills, where he is largely credited with helping grow that company’s business, especially in the quilted segment.
“It all seemed a perfect fit for us,” said Corey Faul, president of Newport/Layton, who had worked with Whiten in the past and known him as an industry friend for more than 20 years. “We had the opportunity to add new product to our assortment that complemented our existing mix, and we had the opportunity to add a very talented individual to our team to help us grow this new business.”
Newport/Layton’s initial quilt program comprises patchwork, print and solid looks, most of them 100% cotton but a smattering of polyester pieces.
They have been divvied into five themes – Summer Brights; Bohemian; Cottage Bloom; West Elm-inspired; and Traditional.
Most of the line is sourced from China, but the higher-end styles are being imported from India.
While the quilted line will for the most part be treated as a separate business for Newport/Layton, Whiten said going forward he sees opportunities to collaborate in palettes and design themes with the company’s decorative pillow and top of bed sides, “where appropriate.”
Whiten is based in Atlanta; Newport/Layton’s headquarters are in Portland, Ore.
