New York - Same-store sales rose 3.1% during the first week of July, according to the Johnson Redbook.
"The performance of the week was supported by the July 4th holiday long weekend, which left its imprint in sales of food, beachwear and outdoor equipment, including barbeque grills," said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.
She added that seasonal products also saw traction and noted stores are ramping up promotions to clear out inventory ahead of the arrival of fall merchandise.
Month-over-month, the week ended July 10 recorded a 0.4% decline compared to June - but that outpaced an expected drop of 0.6%.
