Area rug vendors aim high in Atlanta

For the summer area rug market, many manufacturers are introducing more luxurious collections of contemporary designs geared for the catalog, department and specialty stores. The following is a sampling of what buyers can expect at this week's market.
828 will introduce two new power-loomed and hand-knotted patterns titled Visions and Taos. Visions consists of 11 patterns and is power-loomed on heat-set polypropylene. It is set to retail at $200 for a 5' x 8'. Taos, which includes four tribal designs inspired by the Native American community it is named for, is knotted of 100 percent wool using Persian tying techniques and vibrant colors. It is set to retail at $499 for a 5' x 8'.
The new Nation's Garden collection includes 50 different rugs, each featuring the state flower for each of the 50 states. These rugs are handmade in China and are set to retail at $999 for a 7' x 9'.
Set to debut at Murray's Carmel, CA store, she has created the new Carmel By The Sea collection, which includes depictions of the town's well-known storybook cottages as well as pelicans, sea otters, and poppies. Price points will range from $79 to $199.
Through her licensing agreement with Brumlow Mills, Murray will also introduce eight new designs — including vineyard, garden harvest and fall leaves and ferns — of machine-made, washable polypropylene rugs. Price points average $45.
CMI (COLONIAL MILLS INC.)
Several new collections, including Montage, will be introduced. Montage features chenille combined with a cotton blend of potpourri fabric. It is made of 50 percent polypropylene, 25 percent cotton and 25 percent polyester. Other new collections include Galleria, a ratine rug; Cornucopia, available in 17 colors; Westminster, which features tea-stained colors; Adams, featuring a tweed design; and Jackson.
EBISONS HAROUNIAN IMPORTS
Five new collections from India, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, Nepal and Iran will be introduced. They are: Reflections, featuring antique adaptations of Agra, Mahal and Sultanabad; Tara, wool hand-tufted rugs; Golden Horizon, Sino Persians; Kathmandu, featuring transitional, Savonneri and wildlife motifs; and Peshawar, antique replicas of Zeigler Mahal and Sultanabads.
Foreign Accents is widening its range of contemporary hand-tufted rugs this summer with avant-garde modern design in its new hand-tufted program titled Fiesta. The rugs are made in China, and the construction features a new mod-acrylic quality, resulting in a product that closely resembles wool, said owner Wolfgang Rempen. "With Fiesta, we now have a line of 10 rugs on the market that serve a design-sensitive consumer who is holding back in spending unless the price is right." Fiesta will retail between $399 and $499 for a 5' 3" x 7' 7".
HAROUNIAN RUGS INTERNATIONAL
Nine new collections of imported rugs from Nepal, India and other areas of Asia comprise HRI's new offerings this summer.
Century includes wool and silk rugs handmade in Nepal and are set to retail for $3,025 for a 6' x 9'. The Galleria Collection of wool and silk rugs feature contemporary Nepalese designs in light gray, charcoal, gold, taupe and green with the average price point at $2,999 for a 6' x 9'. Star collection rugs are hand-knotted in India with a patina wash for an antique look and are set to retail for $1,749 for a 6' x 9'. The Melrose collection comes in six overall and medallion designs, and a 6' x 9' is set to retail for $2,375. For the Museum collection, five new antique designs have been added and replicate Heriz, Agra and Serapi designs. They are set to retail at $2,159 for a 6' x 9'. Oasis includes handmade rugs that are set to retail for $3,239 for a 6' x 9'. The Vermont Collection includes rugs handmade in wool and set to retail at $1,439 for a 5' x 8'. The Contempo collection includes wool hand-tufted and hand-carved rugs made in India set to retail at $360 for a 5' x 8'. And the SoHo collection features antique reproduction looks on plush wool. The cost is set at $800 for a 5' x 8'.
Hellenic is adding five new retro colors to its assortment of Flokati rugs. Also, the hand-tufted, 100 percent wool rug line from China will be expanded to include 10 new traditional patterns, featuring new colors in Agra designs.
Karastan will introduce three diverse collections, all of which will be trademarked. Antique Legends is woven domestically on the company's Axminster looms, this collection's rugs feature 30 colors in each of two patterns — Agra Black and Bakhtiyari. The designs are classical with an updated twist. Palazzo is wilton-woven in Belgium, these New Zealand wool rugs are targeted for the mid-price range. They come in five designs and colorways and feature transitional looks in four varieties — Contessa, Murano Venetian glass, Verona and Palermo. Lastly, Loft features contemporary and youthful rugs made in a combination of three yarn systems — three New Zealand wools; jute in jet black; and acrylic shrink yarn in industrial black. The two patterns launching the group are SoHo and Tribeca.
Korhani will for the first time participate at the Atlanta International Area Rug Show, with a new showroom in the 6th floor of the America's Mart Convention Center. New collections, which were not available at press time, will be introduced at the showroom to customers.
The new Sculptique collection, produced domestically and made of 100 percent nylon, comes in 50 designs, each of which is available in nine sizes and five colors. Price points range from $99 to $199 for a 4' x 6' and $149 to $299 for a 6' x 9'.
Sugar Valley, GA
Jacquard woven area rugs are the focus of Mohawk Home's new rug collections.
The Velvet Impressions collection incorporates styles from around the world and features more than 50 patterns utilizing a fine denier heat set olefin yarn and a 12-millimeter pile height. Color schemes include soft beige, sand, camel, celery, savory green, charcoal, ash gray, sunset mauve, dunbar brown and Brunswick red. The entire collection is woven on a new state-of-the-art machine. Retail pricing will be for a 5' x 8' range from $249 to $299.
The Home Essentials collection, more of a promotional line, features a broad range of designs from Africa and Europe. The collection is made from soft denier olefin yarn and double-point construction in up to 35 shades in more than 25 patterns. Prices range from $99 to $199 for the 5' x 8'.
Both new collections will be offered in sizes ranging from scatter rugs and runners to room-size rugs and 8' x 11's.
Saddle Brook, NJ
An array of new collections — handmades and powerlooms — will be introduced in Atlanta. The three new handmade collections are Jewel of Kashmir, which features traditional Indian and Persian designs and is made of 100 percent hand-spun wool yarns; Tamira, hand-knotted replicas of documentary designs made of 100 percent wool pile; and the hand-tufted Versailles Palace, inspired by 18th-century French carpets. New power looms are Grand Parterre roll runners and Valenncierre.
ORIENTAL WEAVERS OF AMERICA
The Bob Mackie Home Collection will have new introductions with brighter, more updated color schemes from the previous lines. The new additions are 10-color, 2-ply, 1,050 denier heat set polypropylene and are set to retail at $299 for 6' x 9' sizes.
As part of the new focus on color and design it started to take since last year, Radici USA plans to introduce for the 2002 market a new collection titled Terra, made of 100 percent heat-set polypropylene. It is set to retail at $99.
THE RUG MARKET
Los Angeles, CA
The Rug Market has several new introductions. The new wool handmades include Angelica and Rosemary, both of which feature floral and garden themes, and Angel Fish, a petit wool hook rug in the shape of a fish featuring vibrant colors. For its kids collection, Rug Market and children's apparel manufacturer and marketer Carter's will introduce cotton machine-woven rugs inspired by the artwork of the late Beatle John Lennon. Also for kids, Rug Market will introduce a more promotional line — cotton rugs that come in sets of two and feature basic color palettes — called Starter's Collection, as well as a 100 percent tufted wool handmade rug titled Galaxy with a $99 price tag for a 3' x 5'.
Through its partnership with Croscill Home, Rug Market will introduce four new handmade wool rugs that coordinate with Croscill bedding lines.
SABRY RUG & TEXTILES
Mohamed Sabry, formerly executive vp, Oriental Weavers and vp, product development and design for Mohawk Home, has announced the introduction of his new company.
Sabry will introduce two side-woven space-dye 100 percent machine-made rug collections. The Fayza collection includes patterns in Oriental designs using a warm color pallet constructed from 32 muted hues. The Sarah collection includes simple patterns.
Sabry said his line is designed for department, furniture and specialty stores and catalogues. The company's new showroom is 3-E-3.
As part of its new licensing agreement with Tommy Bahama, Shaw will introduce its new Tommy Bahama Collection, which will bring together Caribbean warmth and casual elegance in sun-washed color palettes. Exotic animal prints, historical coastal Persians, British colonial designs and images of the West Indies are some of the looks that this collection will offer in sophisticated fibers and substrates.
One of the rugs in the collection, Palms Away, features a decorative trellis and palm trees and is machine woven of nylon.
Sphinx will have several types of new area rugs to introduce at the Atlanta Rug Market. The Metro collection features Sphinx's trademark side-woven construction.
Black colorations will be added to the existing 100 percent wool Posha collection, which consists of classic Tibetan/Nepalese designs. Additional designs will be added to Sphinx's existing Icon and Kharma II collections.
The Pinnacle collection, which is made of high-quality synthetic yarns and is 2 million-point machine-made, will also get new additions.
STANTON RUG COMPANY
Stanton will introduce its new Elite Custom Rug display, which enables its customers to create their own design for an area rug using a variety of border patterns that coordinate with the company's patterned and sisal carpets on site. Stanton also now custom fabricates with chenille borders.

Seven new collections will be introduced. Allura is a 70 percent polypropylene wilton-woven in Belgium. Back Porch is a 100 percent wool hand-tufted in China. Bhutan is 100 percent wool and hand-knotted in China. Corona is a 100 percent polypropylene wilton-woven in France. Milano is a 100 percent wool hand-tufted in India. Monterrey is made of 100 percent viscose and is wilton-woven in Belgium. And Portofino is a 100 percent polypropylene and is wilton-woven in France.
