Donna Karan bares new 'Essentials' collection

NEW YORK — In a dramatic expansion of its design and product reach beyond its October 2000 launch in bed and bath, Donna Karan Home has introduced "Essentials," a range of home textiles accessory products as well as a collection of gift items that can be merchandised within the home textiles shops for holidays and year round.

In bed and bath, Collection, the top-of-the-line bedding segment, introduces Bohemian Luxe, a combination of unique fabrics and fabrications and a plethora of luxury items.

Collection, which has as its core sheet a 350-count, combed Egyptian cotton introduced in October during fall market, now launches a pre-washed 350-count, cotton jacquard sateen sheet.

Bohemian Luxe, which looks like its name implies, is an opulent statement in all its details from a pre-washed wool/cotton blend duvet to an etched velvet, similar to a burnout technique, fashioned into a quilt, and a throw which doubles as a rollup bolster of Pashmina and organza.

Enhancing the luxe mood of this lifestyle is a bevy of pillows from washed twill to rabbit to curly goat.

The two other beds in Collection are extensions of the lifestyles from the October launch, said Patsy Pollack, ceo.

Arctic Mood, an extension of Oasis, layers on a matelasses woven and prints for a distressed look as a coverlet as well as a wool/cotton duvet.

Seduction, the extension of Modern Soul and Zen, uses the etched velvet as a throw and an unusual pick stitch satin quilt.

Eight new colors, in spicy or jewel tones, have been added to the solid-color towel range which now has 18 colors. The 30" x 56" Egyptian cotton ringspun towel weighs about 20 pounds and is on sale at $25.

Essentials is a collection of what Pollack calls "must-have items." They range from a velvet quilt, which reverses, to cotton sateen in eight colors which is also configured as a throw. There's a reversible wool/angora throw, silk saddle bags, futons, sleep sacks that go on top of the futons and a bevy of square and round floor cushions.

Essentials has a four-part color palette: bronze/gold, black/brown, camel/blond and caramel/spicy orange.

Typical sale prices in Essentials are $49.99 for the saddle bag, $149.99 for the regular sized quilt, $79.99 for all decorative pillows, throw-sized quilt and throw. The reversible velvet quilt is $199, queen.

Three new lifestyles are shown in Fashion Beds: Urban Nomad, spiced by a linen/cotton overprinted jacquard duvet, and an arrowhead-motif printed sheet accented with European square and bedskirts of cross dyed iridescent texture; Modern Equestrian, showcased in caramel and blond with a yarn-dyed cotton engineered stripe duvet, metallic accents and a shearling pillow as an accent; and Eclectic Opulence, mixing a velvet scroll motif on a cotton/ polyester microfiber fabric with a solid reverse, a velvet quilt and a soft lacy print cotton sateen sheet at $19.99 for the queen.

The extension of the Pure collection features handkerchief hand sheeting, an engineered embroidered duvet and a heathered cotton for accessories.

The accessories and gift introductions offer holiday items at $19.99 for Christmas felt stockings to sequined velvet ornaments or feather filled glass ornaments. Moving up to more year-round items are a set of three sequined trim boxes, a travel case for communications instruments and a travel pack that includes an eye mask, neck ring and travel tissue, all at $49.99 for the specific sets.
