Soul Sister to launch dec pillows
April 16, 2001,
MONTCLAIR, NJ — Slumber parties courtesy of Soul Sister will soon have more than just funky pajamas to show off.
"Our customers have been asking us to expand, so we decided to make decorative pillows," said Judy Vella, owner and designer.
More specifically, decorative pillows is representative not only of Soul Sisters entrance into the home category but also of its willingness to continue forward, with new bedding lines to come, she explained.
Fabrics for the pillows include poplin for spring and summer lines and flannel for fall and winter collections and are the same "contempo-modern" fabrics used for the company's existing pajama lines, Vella said.
Price points will be between $30 and $40.
The new bedding collection will be introduced by the end of the year. The line will launch strictly with duvet covers "and from there we'll see how that goes," Vella said.
Soul Sister opened its doors two years ago as a pajama manufacturer, which now sells its product at specialty and upscale stores like Anthropologie and Joovay, a SoHo boutique.
"Decorative pillows and bedding are whole different distribution channels and markets for us," Vella said. "And they do have some crossover with our pajamas."
Like so many manufacturers looking to nurture partnerships with retailers, Soul Sister also produces other unrelated but coordinating products — eye masks, for example — to help stores promote and display its wares more successfully.
"Decorative pillows and bedding will do the same," Vella said. "They help to merchandise better. It's good because it helps visually and gets the product out there. It's another vehicle for artwork, and it attracts another customer."
Vella said she attended the show for the first time this year because she was "looking to work with more catalogs. We can make everything in a short time but with a high quality."
Soul Sister manufacturers all its goods domestically at its New Jersey warehouse.
