Brooklyn, N.Y. – The first Ikea store in New York City, a 346,000-square-foot unit in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, is set to open for business June 18.

The Swedish home furnishings retailer currently operates three other metro New York stores in Elizabeth and Paramus, N.J. and in the Long Island town of Hicksville.

Mike Baker, store manager, said more than 500 employees will be hired and trained to run the location.

Set on 22 acres, the store includes a 6.5-acre public waterfront esplanade and transit options that include ferry service connecting with lower Manhattan.

Ikea operates 275 stores in 36 countries, including 34 in the United States, where there are other units under construction in Tampa, Fla.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Somerville, Mass.
