Seasonal sales picking up

New York - Sales were hottest where the weather was coolest last week, with comps up 2.9% following a 3.2% gain the previous week, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
For the retail week ended Oct. 19, same-store sales rose 3.5% in the discount channel and 1.8% in the department store sector.
"Seasonal shopping was the key driver for the week," said Redbook analyst Catlin Levis. "Sales of costumes, candy, decorations and cards are starting to build and the general strength in Halloween-related merchandise sales is improving as we move closer to the end of the month."
She noted that the government shutdown, which ended Oct. 18, might have factored into to lower consumer spending in some parts of the country.
