San Francisco — Twenty-five years after establishing its U.S. division, Peking Handicraft, Inc. will celebrate its anniversary with a party in China next week. It also is commemorating its quarter-century by updating its image.
Now going by the name PHI, the company will continue to use the Peking Handicraft name in conjunction with PHI for at least a year to acclimate customers to the change. The company has changed its logo and packaging as well to a more contemporary version of its signature fan motif. Founded in 1977 as a small importing company dealing in soft tabletop items such as doilies and gift items such as needlepoint pillows and hooked rugs, PHI now imports gift items, decorative top-of-bed and soft window coverings. The company also owns in China a needlepoint factory, a hooked rug factory, a quilt factory, various offices and warehousing and has ownership in a sheet mill.
“We’ve definitely come a long way,” said Janie Leonard, national sales manager.
To celebrate its 25 years in business, company owners Dicky and Annie Lo will host a party at the company’s offices in Shanghai, China. Company executives as well as various Chinese government officials have all been invited to the party, which also will honor Dicky Lo’s involvement in various Chinese boards of trade, anti-terrorist committees and as a liaison between the Chinese and American governments, Leonard said.
