Trident Targets Top 5

Trident/Abhishek Industries Limited is wrapping up a significant expansion process that it believes will make it one of the top five terry towel manufacturers in the world.
The 11-year-old conglomerate does $150 million in sales annually of terry towels, yarn, paper and chemicals, a 138 percent increase from five years ago. Trident's vertically integrated towel mill — Abhishek Industries Ltd. — produces solids, jacquards, beach, sublistatic prints, sets and specialty towels.
The company added 96 looms between June and September of 2004 and since late 2004 has been in the process of adding an additional 60.
By June 1, the company plans to operate 268 looms with a total capacity of 10 million pieces per month. Trident also is licensed to use the Supima and Egyptian Cotton logos, and has been certified by Oekotex, Switzerland, whose testing standard certifies products carry no trace elements of harmful substances used during production.
“A sharp focus is maintained in all activities along the supply chain — from procurement of raw cotton to information management through SAP and ensuring timely deliveries by providing complete logistics solutions,” said P.K. Markanday, joint managing director.
The company has begun testing RFID technology, which top U.S. retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target have already begun to mandate for some vendors.
On the design side, Trident has teamed with New York-based Michele Sinai Inc., which will advise the company on market trends.
Trident exports 70 percent of its production to the United States. This year, the company also plans to increase its market share in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
