Nourison Turns 30, Looks Back at Milestones

Nourison is prepping to celebrate its 30th anniversary in business, come January, marking three decades since the four Peykar brothers together formed the soft floor covering company.
The family-owned and operated Nourison, headquartered here, has grown to become the country's fifth largest rug supplier, with $145 million in category sales in 2008, as reported by HTT.
The Peykar brothers come from a family embedded in the home furnishings industry. Their father operated his own upholstery and drapery business, producing products in the United States and abroad. The brothers became involved in retail operations in the 1970s "and learning what the industry could use. What we came up with was wholesale products," said principal Alex Peykar, who shares the title with his brothers.
They founded Nourison in 1980 as an India-made hand-knotted area rug supplier. The following year, the company also began working with sources in China.
"Over time, we realized our growth came from China," Peykar said. "We did grow in India as well, but the percentage of growth has been much smaller than in China, where we could create products that were very unique to the marketplace."
By the mid-80s, the company added hand-tufted rugs to its product. A decade later, they would overtake hand-knotted rugs in volume.
It was around that same time that Nourison unveiled its "Nourison 2000" collection — which today remains one of its best-selling lines.
"It was our rug of the future. It was the first tufted collection that was revolutionary in its design detail," Peykar explained.
Another turning point for Nourison came about eight years ago when the company opened for business its domestics, or accent rug, division. The launch coincided with the company's other new venture at the time, machine-made rugs.
Nourison started the machine-made business with two looms in China, and today the division encompasses three manufacturing arms. "What we did was we concentrate again on what voids we found in the market," he said.
Broadloom represents Nourison's most recent product addition. Four years ago, the company began manufacturing high-end wool broadloom carpeting.
Today, only three of the original four Peykar brothers still operate the business. Brother number two, Edmund, retired eight years ago. Oldest brother Paul along with Alex, the third brother, and the youngest, Steven, continue to run the company.
Of the second generation, there is Andrew, Paul's son, who has been with the company for 15 years and is involved in all the IT-related departments. Jonathan, Alex's son, joined Nourison four years ago working in the broadloom department in production and logistics. Some of the brothers' daughters have come to work for Nourison in various capacities, including design, but have taken time off to care for their young children.
Peykar credits the company's "wonderful team" for spurring Nourison's growth over the years.
"And let'd add that we also have always been fortunate to have a working for us and manage to create a synergy that has allowed us to grow over the years," said. "What we see going forward is really a foundation that has been created for all of our product categories and a readiness to grow at good or better rates than we have in past few years."
"It is our philosophy to always go out and learn what is in the market before we make a move," Peykar said. "To create something new, one needs to understand the existing market, the existing players and the products, and then make something different from what everyone else offers."
