Chris Stone future up in the air
December 29, 2009-- Home Textiles Today,
Vernon, Calif. – Decorative fabrics converter, printer, dyer and finisher Chris Stone, Inc. ceased operating Dec. 21.
The future outcome of the legendary business will be determined over the next several weeks, said Brian Davidoff, of the law firm Rutter, Hobbs & Davidoff, the attorney for the board. “We will have a clearer direction then,” Davidoff said.
The board is evaluating alternatives for the company.
The company was founded in 1977 by Chris Stone and became part of the legendary California design scene of the era. It was noted for its distinctive California drop cloth contemporary motifs mixing hand-printed and hand-painted looks on colored grounds.
Part of its uniqueness in addition to the design originality was the fact that it had its own printing, dyeing and finishing equipment on site.
Chris Stone stepped down from the presidency of the company in 1997 and was succeeded by Ron Kneitel. Stone died in 1998.
Most recently the company was run by Brian Wygle, who left in November.
