Lulan Artisans creates, launches a textiles competition

Charleston, S.C. – Sustainable, Southeast Asian home textiles company Lulan Artisans has launched a textiles competition called 11º17º, the approximate latitude and longitude of Vietnam, where the company’s founder was inspired to start her business.
The company announced the competition in mid May during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York.
The 11º17º Textile Competition launches June 1 and is open through Oct. 15. Applicants must be 18 years or older to enter.
“Over the years, thousands of textile designers inspired by Lulan’s commitment to craft and design have inquired as to how to get involved with us,” said Eve Blossom, founder and ceo. “This competition allows us to celebrate craftsmanship, promote talent and provide opportunities for textile artists who are perhaps as yet undiscovered.”
Entries must be of linen and cotton and must “highlight the weavers’ skills by focusing on the ‘woven by hand’ aspect of production while still incorporating the contemporary modern aesthetic so as to complement the existing Lulan 11º17º offering,” she added.
Aside from a cash prize of $1,500, winners’ designs will become part of the 2010 Lulan collection, and they will be credited for the work and contribution as well as be promoted online at the company's website, www.Lulan.com.
In addition to the competition, designers will have the option of participating in Lulan’s “No Design Gets Left Behind” Creative Commons initiative, “where any design they submit, with their permission, will be made available for artisans around the world to use, forging global connections,” Blossom said.
Lulan Artisans was founded in 2005 and is headquartered here. Its product assortment includes high-end, hand-woven, hand-dyed natural textiles crafted by both U.S. designers and Southeast Asian artisans.
