FAISALABAD, Pakistan—Leading international home textiles manufacturer Crescent Textile Mills Ltd. (Crestex) is investing heavily in state-of-the-art equipment and continuous process improvement to expand its business in the global marketplace.
Founded in 1950 by Haji Muhammad Shafi, Crestex is a leading vertical producer of yarn, greige goods, decorative fabrics and finished home textiles, including bed linens, table linens and kitchen textiles for the retail and hospitality channels of distribution. Crestex has annual sales of approximately US $100 million and exports more than 60 percent of its products to the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Asian countries. The U.S. is an important and growing market for the company, currently representing about one-quarter of the company’s export trade. Domestic sales represent about 36 percent of the company’s business.
Crestex was the first division of the public limited Crescent Group, which has grown to become one of Pakistan’s premier industrial and financial conglomerates. The Crescent Group encompasses more than 36 independent companies in the textiles, sugar, steel, dairy, jute, financial services, power generation, information technology and software development sectors. The Group as a whole has more than 30,000 employees and annual sales in excess of US $750 million.
Chief executive Muhammad Anwar and deputy chief executive Nasir Shafi currently manage Crestex, and the company prides itself on its progressive management approach. Crestex was one of the first textile companies in Pakistan to receive ISO 9002 certification, in 1997, and also was certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100 in 2000. As part of its commitment to the environment, Crestex maintains its own effluent treatment plant.
The company’s vertical manufacturing facilities total more than 1.4 million square feet and feature the most modern spinning, weaving, finishing and processing equipment, including machinery from Rieter, Toyota, Trutzschler, Murata, Beninger, Zimmer Reggiani and Babcock, among others. Crestex recently upgraded its weaving units to air jet machines, and also set up a separate embroidery unit with more than 20 multi-needle machines for its finished home textiles.
Crestex has more than 6,000 employees, including managers certified in Six Sigma Black Belt standards. The company’s dynamic approach to management includes a corporate commitment to Enterprise Resource Planning, which will integrate all of its internal processes to ensure speed and accuracy throughout the organization. The company’s continuous improvement and sound business practices have enabled Crestex to enter into a variety of joint ventures and strategic alliances with American and European companies, continuing to expand the company’s presence in the international home textiles industry.
