Minneapolis - Investigators discovered that hackers responsible for Target's data breach stole credentials from a vendor and used them to gain access to the company's computer system, a Target spokesperson said yesterday.
According to published reports, spokesperson Molly Snyder emailed several news organizations with the latest information but did not offer further details, other than that Target has taken extra security precautions.
Also on Wednesday, the Justice Departments said it launched a criminal investigation into the cyber theft.
"We are committed to working to find not only the perpetrators of these sorts of data breaches, but also any individuals and groups who exploit that data via credit card fraud," Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., said, appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
