Tools of the Trade

It's not a solution for world peace, but suppliers of bathroom cleaning tools are tackling one of life's vexing issues: After one cleans the bathroom or unplugs a drain, what to do with the tools?
Stowing the tools used to do the job can be problematic. Toilet brushes and other implements can shed droplets of dirty water, releasing bacteria on an otherwise clean floor or cabinet.
According to Newell Rubbermaid, after just one use, traditional plungers are coated with up to 3.2 million harmful bacteria that reside in toilets. Putting the plunger into a trash can or plastic bag does not stop the spread of germs. As a result, the company came up with the Rubbermaid Clean & Dry Plunger, which is protected with a Never Wet nanotech coating. The coating forms a shield that repels water. Like car wax, water instantly beads up and rolls off the Clean & Dry Plunger, reducing the spread of germs and eliminating drips
Another solution is the OXO Good Grips Combo Toilet Brush and Plunger Set for $39.99. The compact footprint is ideal for narrow spaces, like between the wall and toilet. It also keeps the brush and plunger covered. The canister doors pop open and stay open when the toilet brush or plunger is removed. After cleaning, place the tool back in the canister, and the doors close automatically. The plunger works on all toilets, including low flow.
Polder offers a similar product with its Dual Bath Caddy for about $30. The bath caddy comes in brushed stainless-steel with plastic accents and includes toilet-bowl brush and plunger, each with replaceable heads. The open-back and suspended design encourages drying.
Umbra's new Hanger Squeegee, which retails for $10, offers a different solution. Intended for cleaning shower walls, it also aids consumers who are trying to be green by using reusable cloths for wiping down surfaces. It can hold a light item, like rag. And it comes with a suction cup if consumers want to hang it on a tile wall or glass door.
The newest product from Vipp also takes care of its own storage. A small broom nestles into a dustpan, and both have a sleek design in black rubber and aluminum and can be hung with the integrated rubber strap.
