New York - MLK Day sales and clearance activity helped push comps ahead 3.2% year-over-year last week following a 3.1% increase the previous week, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index.
Month-to-date, January was up 3.1% compared to January of last year. Johnson Redbook's target for the full month is a bump of 3.4%.
"The focus of clearance and inventory reshaping continued to make for sporadic activity during the third week," said Redbook analyst Catlin Levis. "Gross margins for soft goods continued under pressure. Apparel and other seasonal soft lines ranked higher on volume leader lists as retailers sold discounted merchandise."
Coming off what appears to be a soft holiday season, many retailers are stocking their Valentine's Day and spring goods earlier than usual, she added.
