Home Depot nabs EPA’s Energy Star Award

Atlanta – For the 14th consecutive year, The Home Depot has been named an “Energy Star” Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The 2,263-unit home improvement chain earned the honor for “sustained excellence for its outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through promotion of energy-efficient products.” The accomplishment will be recognized at a special ceremony in Washington D.C. on April 29.

"By providing customers with more energy-efficient choices, The Home Depot is helping American consumers save energy and money while protecting the environment," said Bob Perciasepe , EPA deputy administrator. "Energy Star products help to reduce harmful carbon pollution that contributes to the changing climate."

The 2014 Partner of the Year Awards are given to a variety of organizations that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through better energy efficiency. Award winners are selected from the 16,000 organizations that participate in the Energy Star program.

This year’s recognition comes as The Home Depot has increased its Energy Star product assortment to marketing and promotions, building consumer awareness of and demand for Energy Star. Through the sale of such products in 2013, Home Depot claims it helped its customers save nearly $770 million in annual utility costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 4.7 million metric tons.

"Our customers are increasingly looking for products that have earned the Energy Star," said Ron Jarvis, vp of environmental, The Home Depot. "Our partnership with Energy Star allows us to offer our customers high quality, energy-efficient products that will also save them money on their energy bills."

Through 2013, with help from Energy Star, American families and businesses have saved $297 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA noted.
