School Daze

It’s never too early to start prepping for BTC

School DazeMost college students had been home for only two or three weeks by the beginning of June, but Bed Bath & Beyond was already gearing up to send them back to campus. At its Manhattan flagship store in Chelsea, the first assortment to greet shoppers entering the bedding department on June 3 was a display of sheets and other dorm essentials flagged with Campus & Beyond signage. The four-sided set was stocked on two sides with copies of the retailer’s College Shopping Guide & Checklist — and signage urging passersby to take one.

While not featured in a big way, a Shop For College link was already posted on the retailer’s home page right next to the gift and wedding registry link.

Shop For College merchandise online was divided into seven categories (sleep, eat, wash, study, organize, relax and collegiate stuff), with more than 4,500 products — some 3,000 in the collegiate stuff area alone.

The site’s Find Your College guide offers PDF files for hundreds of colleges, noting what each provides — and prohibits — in its dorm rooms. And Bed Bath & Beyond’s “Pack and Hold” service was already up and running. It allows a student to shop at his or her local store before leaving for college, then pick up the merchandise at a BBB store near campus.

Do not pass go. Do not pass go. To get into the bedding department at the Chelsea store, shoppers must navigate the Back-to-College display.
More than merchandise. The guide offers students tips about how to make flimsy dorm mattresses more comfortable. More than merchandise.
Dominated Dominated by sheets, the display included a few inexpensive add-ons.
