Mohawk's Moyer moves on to Balta

Dalton, GA — In a sudden move that left his co-workers stunned, Patrick Moyer, vp of marketing for Mohawk Home, last week abruptly left his post — which he had held for the past three years — to join Belgian-based area rug manufacturer Balta as president of U.S. operations based here.
For Moyer, the move was bittersweet.
"I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my time at Mohawk, and I'm so appreciative of the work I was given to do there. It was very difficult for me to leave all my friends and family, literally — that's where my brothers still work," Moyer told Home Textiles Today. His brothers, both with Mohawk Home, are, David, a regional business manager, and Scott, a distribution manager of one of the local plants.
"I carry with me 15 years of wonderful memories with these people and the company," Moyer said. "But I felt I owed it to myself and family to move on when this new opportunity came up, and I'm prepared for it and anxious to start."
Bill Kilbride, president of Mohawk Home, told Home Textiles Today he will "miss" Moyer and wishes him well in his new venture.
"Pat did a great number of things for us, and he was definitely a key participant in the growth of this company," Kilbride said. "We will miss him. Pat and I are friends, and we'll continue to be friends. He had a great opportunity in front of him that is of great interest to him, and I wished him well and hope to help him in any way we can in his new endeavor."
Kilbride announced several executive changes in the wake of Moyer's departure. (See related story, page 1.)
In his new stint for the Balta's new USA division, which officially began last week, Moyer said he will be in charge of creating and generating business for the company in the U.S. market for the first time.
"I'll be involved in every aspect of the business," said Moyer of his newly created post. "I'll have input in everything from customer service, product development, marketing and sales. I am very excited about it."
Balta USA earlier this year opened for the first time a 300,000-square-foot facility here for its headquarters, where it will warehouse and distribute four different types of flooring products — area rugs, broadloom carpeting, vinyl flooring and laminated flooring — all made in Belgium where the company was founded and is based. The area rug assortment includes polypropylene rugs and premium wool rugs in a range of sizes from scatters to 9' x 12'.
Moyer will report directly to Balta owner Filip Balcaen.
With the exception of a short stint as an English high school teacher at Hialeah/Miami Lakes High in South Florida and later as a college football coach, Moyer has devoted the bulk of his career to the area rug and textiles industry.
His first entry was when he took a job as regional sales manager in 1987 with area rug and doormat manufacturer American Rug Craftsmen Inc. He worked his way up the company ranks, from vp of product development to vp of national accounts and finally to vp of sales — at which point, in 1992, Mohawk bought the company.
"I stayed on board as vp of sales until 1999, when I was promoted to vp of marketing," Moyer explained. "In my last position, I was in charge of marketing for all the Mohawk Home divisions that the company had acquired and consolidated — Newmark, Goodwin Weavers, Aladdin, Crown Crafts and American Weavers. Each had its own sales manager but I was vp, marketing for everyone, supervising about 10 people.
"Making the move was something I was agonizing over for several weeks," Moyer said. "But I tell my teenage kids they have to be willing to take risks and go for it when they see an opportunity. And this one was a good one for me. I'm 38 years old. If I don't do it now, when will I?"
