The number of self-checkout lanes has climbed 47 percent, according to a study from IHL Consulting Group, and should surpass $1 billion in market value by 2005. "The depth and breadth of the installations continued to grow even in a tough economy, said Greg Buzek, president. "The movement into new retail segments including DIY with The Home Depot and a wider penetration into the grocery, warehouse club, and mass merchants is providing for a solid base from which we expect to see continued growth in years to come."
NRF adds international division
Due to the increasing globalization in retail, the National Retail Federation is also going global, announcing its new International Retail Federation. A division of the NRF, the IRF will serve the needs of retailers based outside the U.S. through networking events, education, products, services and other resources. "The National Retail Federation has always been a true global retail organization dedicated to the needs of retailers worldwide," said Tracy Mullin, president and ceo, NRF, as well as president of the IRF. "With the creation of the IRF, we can now bring our international members all of the benefits and services of NRF within one global entity."
Company seeks to purchase Elder-Beerman

Last month, EB Acquisition said it was interested in an all-cash transaction at a premium to the then- existing share price, and said that Elder-Beerman had not responded to the letter.
