Target headed for Herald Square

Mass merchant presses on with urban market strategy in NYC

Minneapolis-Target will open a 43,000-square-foot, small-format store in Manhattan’s Herald Square in October.

Located slightly to the west of the intersection of Broadway and 34 th Street, the Herald Square store will be one of 30 the mass-merchant retailer plans to open this year, and will be the company’s third location in Manhattan, joining stores in the Harlem and Tribeca sections. Target had previously announced plans to open other small-format locations in Manhattan, including one in the East Village (projected to open summer 2018) and another in Hell’s Kitchen (slated to open in 2019).

Target is focused on expanding its small-format stores in dense urban neighborhoods, with New York being a priority market for the company’s growth, according to a statement from the retailer. The flexible store design allows for stores in smaller locations, with assortments that are tailored to meet the needs of local shoppers.

Included in the assortment will be home products geared toward small living spaces, the statement said. Grab-and-go food, grocery, apparel for the whole family and health and beauty items will also be part of the assortment. The store will also have a CVS pharmacy and will offer Target’s Order Pickup Service, which enables shoppers to order online and pick up in the store.

“Not only will we be able to serve the thousands of working professionals that travel through Herald Square each day, but we’ll have the opportunity to showcase Target’s exclusive brands and compelling offers for the many tourists from around the world who shop in this vibrant neighborhood in Manhattan,” said Mark Schindele, Target’s senior vp of properties.
